History of the Champions League

The Champions League is considered to be the most prestigious football competition for club sides in the world. It is a competition for clubs that play their football in Europe. European football clubs tend to have the best players and managers in the world thanks to the financial rewards and other factors.

It all started in the 1992 – 1993 season. Prior to becoming the Champions League, the most elite club competition in Europe was called the European Cup. The European Cup was first introduced back in 1955 and teams progressed in the competition on a knockout basis. Teams played each other home and away and the victors over 2 legs made it to the next round.

Today, the Champions League tournament consists of 32 club sides. Teams are selected from European leagues based on their final league positions. When it first started there were only 8 teams competing in the tournament after a qualification stage. These teams were divided into 2 groups and the winners of each group competed in the final.

In 1994 – 1995 the Champions League was changed to include 16 teams after the qualification rounds. This changed again in 1997 – 1998 where it expanded to 24 teams after qualification. There were six groups of 4 teams and the top 2 teams in each group made it through to the knockout stage of the competition.

The Champions League was expanded again in 1999 – 2000 to include 32 teams. Now there were 8 groups of 4 teams in the group stage and the top 2 teams entered a second group stage. The winners of the second group stage progressed to the knockout stages.

It was decided in 2014 – 2015 to get rid of the second group stage and replace this with another knockout stage known as the “round of 16”. This is the format that exists today for the Champions League. After the round of 16 there are the quarter finals, the semifinals and the final.
